Alan saw Corbin surreptitiously come and go from Audrey’s place, yet he’s denied knowing her. Then, Kate runs into a tearful man claiming to be the dead woman’s old boyfriend, who insists Corbin did the deed the night that he left for London.
When she reaches out to her cousin, he proclaims his innocence and calms her nerves—until she comes across disturbing objects hidden in the apartment and accidentally learns that Corbin is not where he says he is. Could Corbin be a killer? What about Alan? Kate finds herself drawn to this appealing man who seems so sincere, yet she isn’t sure. Jet-lagged and emotionally unstable, her imagination full of dark images caused by the terror of her past, Kate can barely trust herself, so how could she take the chance on a stranger she’s just met?
Kate Priddy is trying hard to rebuild her life. Her first college boyfriend became a bit crazed when she ended their relationship, stalked her, abducted her, and then committed suicide. It has taken years for Kate to be able to leave her home and interact with society without suffering from anxiety or panic attacks. Now she’s ready to push her burgeoning sense of freedom to the limit by leaving all things familiar in the UK with a trip to Boston, Massachusetts in an apartment swap with a cousin, Corbin Dell, she’s never met. Kate is pleased with her new living arrangements and is eager to begin studying in the US when a woman is found murdered in an apartment on the same floor as her cousin’s apartment. Kate is a little concerned about the murder happening so close to where she’s living but is sure that the murder has nothing to do with her or her cousin until she finds proof that her cousin lied about his relationship with the deceased. Adding to the confusion factor is Kate’s attraction to another building resident, Alan Cherney, especially when she finds out that he knew her cousin was in a relationship with the murder victim and he himself was enamored with the victim. Is it possible Kate simply attracts people with stalker behavior or is Alan a nice guy with a bad habit of voyeurism?
I found Her Every Fear to be a taut, chilling, and fast-paced read. The story is told in alternating voices of Kate and Corbin, so the reader gets to know each of these characters a bit better. Mr. Swanson builds the tension within the story and provides subtle hints that made this reader think she had it all figured out when the story took a nice twist and threw me off-balance (in a good way). Needless to say, I didn’t have it figured out at all. It was fascinating to watch Kate grow in confidence and battle with the bad guys (there are black hat bad guys and shades-of-gray hat bad guys), literally and figuratively speaking. Her Every Fear provides just the right amount of intrigue, suspense, chills, thrills, and hints of romance to make for a wholly enjoyable read. I enjoyed reading Her Every Fear so much I grabbed a copy of The Girl with a Clock for a Heart to read and am looking forward to reading The Kind Worth Killing. I’m also adding Mr. Swanson to my favorite author list and am looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. If you enjoy suspenseful reads, then I strongly urge you to grab a copy of Her Every Fear to read.
