Character Guest Post: CAUGHT UP IN IT by David Burnsworth

Caught Up In It by David Burnsworth

Hello, my bookish peeps. For those of you that celebrated Easter and Passover, I hope you had wonderful holidays. For those of you that don’t celebrate, I hope you had a pleasant weekend. I’m super-excited to welcome today’s guest, as he takes a moment and steps off the pages of Caught Up In It by David Burnsworth, the latest in the Blu Carraway Mystery series. Please welcome Blu Carraway as he tells us a bit about himself and the other Charleston (the one further south than the one I reside in here in West Virginia 😉).

My name’s Blu Carraway and I run a private investigation agency in South Carolina in a little city called Charleston. I’m guessing most of you have visited my locale or are at least planning on it. The fact that it’s a popular vacation destination does help my business.

I live on a small barrier island just south of the city along with a small herd of Carolina Marsh Tackey horses who are convinced it’s theirs and only barely tolerate my presence. Except that two of them, named Dink and Doofus, who hit up all visitors for treats upon getting out of their cars. I’m not excluded and I live there for Pete’s sake. My grandfather bought the nine acres (measured at low tide) and I inherited it when my parents retired and decided to travel the world.

My daughter Hope manages the business side of things. Barely in her twenties, she helped double the accounts receivable in six months she’s that good. All I can say is she got her mother’s face, and not mine thank God, and a calmness I’m not so sure came from either of us. I’m almost twenty years divorced and don’t ever want to see Hope’s mother again if I can help it.

My business partner, Mick Crome, drinks too much and gets into too many fights. And he kills people, only some of which I know about. But, we’ve been blood brothers since Desert Storm. I only wish he’d make better choices.

The jobs we take are simple. We pride ourselves that we don’t shy away from violence and enjoy private security gigs as much as finding some socialite’s missing spoiled brat (which you can read about in my first adventure, In It For the Money, from 2017.)

This morning, I got up, drank my usual two glasses of iced coffee, and went to the gym for a hedonistic workout routine with two meatheads who seem to enjoy piling on the reps. After a quick shower, I checked in with my daughter—I mean office manager—since I’m between jobs. My partner was already on the job, working background for a security gig we have booked for later in the week and complaining because I wasn’t at work yet. Never mind that he once dropped out for three years, leaving me holding the bag on a huge mound of debt. But that’s another story.

Tonight I’ll have dinner with my girlfriend Tess and she’ll give me another slice of her twenty-year-younger-than-me insight of the world and I’ll eat it up.

Things could be worse, like having to work a real job. Instead, I live in the best place on earth. If only I could keep Crome from shooting someone else. Then I’d be in high cotton.

The award-winning diva, C, has got a big problem: someone wants her dead. A team of mercenaries attempts to gun her down in Kuala Lumpur. Lucky for her, Lowcountry Private Investigator, Blu Carraway, is already on the job there for a different client. Double-lucky for C, they make their move when she’s chit-chatting with him in a bar. Unlucky for the mercenaries, four of them end up dead. The hunt is on now for the mega-pop star. Where does she go to hide out? The sleepy islands around Charleston, South Carolina — Blu’s backyard. He’s already proven himself once, so C hires the Blu Carraway Investigation Agency to protect her for real. The job takes Blu halfway around the world and several cities in between. The search for the truth reveals what could drive a person to want someone else dead. And Blu Carraway ends up right in the way.
