Guest Author: Andrea Kane – AT ANY COST

Good day, book people. I’m sure you’re not even the least bit surprised to know that I have a huge list of authors that I follow. I even have a list of authors that I use to purchase new books without knowing what the book is about. Admittedly, that list isn’t huge but it does have over a dozen authors on it, so it definitely adds up. But then, authors are writing books not just for our reading pleasure but to sell books and make a living. I have a tendency to forget that they aren’t simply writing to keep me happy. One of the authors on my pre-purchase or immediately purchase list is the esteemed Andrea Kane. Ms. Kane is the author of the Forensic Instincts series and today we’re celebrating the recent release of the latest addition to this series, At Any Cost. I’m incredibly honored to welcome Ms. Kane to the blog today as she share’s her thoughts on the anticipation, excitement, and work involved in releasing a book. Thank you, Ms. Kane, for joining us today, I’m sure everyone is eager to learn what you have to share with us.

It’s already March, which means that At Any Cost‘s release date (March 22nd) is here! With that realization comes excitement, anticipation, joy… and more butterflies in my stomach than you can count.

You’d think I’d be over that extreme reaction. After 31 published novels, you’d think that the release of a new book would bring with it a warm glow, not a blazing inferno. You’d certainly think that opening night stage fright would be a thing of the past. Well, for me, neither is the case.

The writing of each of my books is a work of fierce commitment, of hard work and endless hours. There are up days and down days, love days and hate days. But when all is said and done, it’s a year-long bond with characters and storylines that I create. So, in a sense, I feel as if each book is a little piece of me, and I’m like a new mom with her new baby—awed, attached, and nervous about sharing my newborn with the outside world.

Release day is that day of sharing. It’s wonderful and thrilling, and it’s apprehensive and nerve-racking. I’ve poured everything I have into this book—how will it be received? Will my readers love it the way I want them to? Will they love—or hate—my characters the way I’ve intended? Will they feel as connected to the Forensic Instincts team as I do? Will they thrill to the plot and eagerly cling to the storyline as the pages fly by? Will they feel compelled to recommend the book to their friends, families, book groups, etc.?

And that’s just the emotional inferno.

So now, let’s talk sales. They matter greatly, not only for the tangible reasons of feeding the family and paying the mortgage, but as indicators of how the book is being received. Obviously, the greater the sales, the more readers I’m reaching, and, hopefully, introducing them to my works, or giving them another of my books to savor. That’s a huge responsibility and an even huger challenge. I have to poke my apprehensive head out of my secluded world and check out the realities. First, we have reviews. Truthfully, I’m not a huge fan of reading my own reviews, because one harsh review in a sea of fabulous ones is enough to kill my creativity for the week. I also strongly dislike being a numbers watcher, because the sales process changes minute by minute, and so many factors go into those numbers that the highs and lows are too overwhelming to contemplate, much less to follow. I’m grateful that I have business savvy, objective, level-headed people to do that for me.

Last comes the fact that I’m definitely a control freak, and this entire process is so far out of my control that it’s maddening. All I can do is write the very best book I can, reach out and share the news with my readers, implement my marketing and my publicity campaigns, and then release my book into the world with the highest of hopes, a bevy of excitement… and a gazillion butterflies in my stomach. ♦

Synopsis:

At Any Cost by Andrea Kane

Aimee Bregman had the perfect life. She had an enviable job as head of marketing for an up-and-coming CBD-infused beer that was taking the tri-state area by storm. She had cultivated a massive social media following that showcased the beer at college campus parties and alumni events―and had fun doing it. She had an attentive, steady boyfriend and friends who believed in her. Everything was going right.

But when her long-time mentor, Rita, sets up a business meeting with an important influencer―her life crashes all around her. The casual meeting over drinks suddenly devolves into a shouting match between all parties, and any chance of a new business relationship is over before it begins. Hours later, when the NYPD shows up at Aimee’s apartment, questioning her about Rita’s abrupt disappearance―foul play suspected―Aimee realizes she’s in way over her head.

Fearing that Rita has been murdered and that she may be next, Aimee hires Forensic Instincts to keep her safe and figure out what’s really going on.

Forensic Instincts, a brilliant investigative firm that walks the fine line between legal and illegal, solves challenging and high-profile cases when the bureaucratic restrictions imposed on law enforcement get in the way of achieving results. But neither Aimee nor Forensic Instincts realize how ruthless, how connected, their adversaries are. As dangerous and powerful people are threatened with exposure, anyone is fair game for elimination. And when multiple victims die at the hands of a sociopathic serial killer, it gets harder and harder to tell where the battle lines are drawn… and who might die next.

WHAT IF YOU FOUND YOUR FRIEND DEAD AND FEARED YOU’D BE NEXT?

Jewelry designer Fiona McKay is working on her latest collection of Celtic-inspired jewelry. She’s excited by the possibilities uncovered by Rose Flaherty, the antiquities dealer helping her research the heirloom tapestries inspiring her new collection. So when Rose calls to tell her she has answers, Fiona hurries to meet her. But her artistic world is shattered when she finds the lifeless body of the elderly woman.

Why would anyone kill such a harmless person? And what if Fiona had arrived just a few minutes earlier? Would she have been killed as well? Unnerved, she heads for her brother’s Brooklyn apartment seeking advice and comfort.

Ryan McKay, Forensic Instincts’ technology wiz is not amused by his little sister interrupting his evening with his girlfriend and co-worker, Claire Hedgleigh. But when Ryan and Claire hear the details of Rose’s murder, they fear that Fiona could be next, and quickly assume the role of her protectors. What they’re unaware of is how many people are desperately seeking the information now buried along with Rose.

A former IRA sniper. A traitorous killer who worked for the British. Two vicious adversaries taking their epic battle to America. A secret Irish hoard as the grand prize in a winner takes all fight to the death.

As the story woven into the tapestries passed down from McKay mother to daughter unravels, Forensic Instincts realizes that Fiona and her family are in grave danger. Together, the team must stay one step ahead of two rival assassins or risk Fiona’s life and the McKay family tree.

The Forensics Instincts’ (FI) crew are back and this case is quite convoluted and touches home in more ways than one. It all begins when Ryan McKay’s younger sister, Fiona, a budding jewelry designer, visits one of her favorite antiquities contacts for information and finds the elderly woman’s murdered body instead. This is followed by Fiona’s apartment being ransacked and her computer hacked. What could an antiques dealer and a jewelry designer possibly have in common? The more the FI crew investigates, the more they realize this may be tied to a McKay family heirloom. As more clues are uncovered, they begin to realize that everyone they’re coming in contact with have secret pasts they want to keep hidden. Some tied to the IRA and events in the mid-1980s in Ireland and others tied to the McKay ancestors and their immigration from Ireland to the US in the 1920s. Is it possible that Ryan and Fiona’s great-grandmother put clues into the tapestry she created all those years ago? Will they be able to piece together the clues before someone else dies, perhaps one of the McKays or a member of the FI team?

One of the things I enjoy about all of the Forensics Instincts books are the suspense and how well the team works together. They may seem to be a mishmash of disparate personalities and abilities, but they work well together and just seem to fit. The president of the business is Casey Woods, a millionaire who puts her money to work for good and fur-momma to Hero, the FI human-scent evidence bloodhound. Marc Deveraux tempers Casey’s tempestuous nature and is often second in command. Marc is a former Navy SEAL as well as being a former FBI behavioral analyst. The team’s security expert, Patrick Lynch, is another former FBI agent. Ryan is the team’s computer expert, tech guru, and creator of their awesome AI teammate, Yoda. Claire Hedgleigh is Ryan’s girlfriend and the team’s psychic or claircognizant. Emma Stirling is the newest member of the investigative team and a reformed pickpocket. They definitely have diverse skill sets, but like I said before, it works. This time around, Claire uses her abilities to “detect” what she can by touching the McKay family tapestries. The subtle clues she’s able to pickup, help direct the team, along with the little information they were able to glean from documentation received from Rose Flaherty, the murder victim. This story incorporates a lost treasure hunt, greed, intrigue, Irish history, Irish politics and nationalism, along with secret pasts. There are stories within stories and it was fascinating to see the layers uncovered and the secrets revealed. For those of you that have read any of the previous Forensics Instincts books, I encourage you to go and grab a copy of No Stone Unturned to read. If you haven’t read any of the Forensics Instincts books in the past, you can start with No Stone Unturned (trust me on this one folks) and work your way backwards. There’s enough backstory provided that you won’t be lost. I enjoyed this adventure, especially the opportunity to get to meet Fiona McKay (btw, you can actually shop her jewelry line at fionamckayjewerly) and other members of the McKay family. I look forward to reading more in this series in the future.

Happy Reading y’all! (Please stay safe out there and follow all health guidelines and restrictions.)

What would you do if your daughter was kidnapped and given only a week to live?

Lauren Pennington is celebrating her junior year abroad when life comes to a screeching halt. At Munich’s Hofbräuhaus, she engages in an innocent flirtation with a charming stranger for the length of a drink. Drink finished, Lauren leaves—only to be snatched from the streets and thrown into an unmarked van.

Officially, Aidan Deveraux is a communications expert for one of the largest financial firms in the world. In his secret life, the former Marine heads the Zermatt Group, a covert team of military and spy agency operatives that search the data stream for troubling events in an increasingly troubled world. When his artificial intelligence system detects Lauren’s kidnapping, Aidan immediately sees the bigger picture.

Silicon Valley: Lauren’s father, Vance Pennington, is about to launch a ground-breaking technology with his company NanoUSA—a technology that the Chinese are desperate for. No sooner does Aidan arrive on Vance’s doorstep to explain the situation than the father receives a chilling text message: hand over the technology or Lauren will be dead in a week.

In a globe-spanning chase, from the beer halls of Germany, to the tech gardens of California, to the skyscrapers of China, and finally the farmlands of Croatia, Aidan’s team cracks levels of high-tech security and complex human mystery with a dogged determination. Drawing in teammates from the Forensic Instincts team (introduced in The Girl Who Disappeared Twice), the Zermatt Group will uncover the Chinese businessmen responsible, find the traitors within NanoUSA who are helping them, and save Lauren from a brutal death.

Lauren Pennington is nothing more than an American foreign-exchange student, biding her time in Germany during her break when an attractive man sits down at a renowned bar and has a drink with her. A few minutes later, Lauren has disappeared. Her family in the US knows nothing of her disappearance, but they will because Lauren has been taken as leverage. Lauren’s father, Vance Pennington, is a high-ranking executive with a company about to introduce breakthrough technology in the communication industry. Little does he know that he’ll have to choose between his career, company, country, and his daughter’s life in the latest addition to Andrea Kane’s Forensic Instincts series, Dead in a Week. Fortunately, for Lauren and her parents, Aiden Deveraux has a secretive and behind-the-scenes company, the Zermatt Group, that intuited Lauren’s disappearance from the global computer surveillance and the reasons why well before her father was even contacted by the kidnappers. Now the question becomes, can Aiden, along with a few employees from Forensic Instincts, beat the deadline provided to Vance Pennington, locate and successfully retrieve Lauren before Vance has to do the unthinkable?

Dead in a Week is the seventh book in the Forensic Instincts series and the first to introduce us to the Zermatt Group. This taut suspense-thriller is filled with covert spy-like operations within the US and abroad all in an effort to thwart the kidnappers and the loss of corporate technological secrets to a foreign company. Aiden Deveraux is the defacto head of the Zermatt Group and brother to Mark Deveraux, a member of the Forensic Instincts team. Like Marc, Aiden is well-connected internationally and very well trained, militarily speaking. It is primarily due to Aiden’s connections that the Zermatt Group is able to search for Lauren in such a short period of time, bouncing from New York, to California, to Germany and Croatia, and then back stateside. The investigation is multi-modal as well in that it uses high-tech computer skills and technicians as well as highly-intuitive “agents” for lack of a better term. The head computer guru is a female, as is the intuitive business management operative. The covert and military-style operations are carried out by Aiden, Marc, and one of Aiden’s British compatriots. Needless to say, there’s a lot going on in this story: a kidnapping, family angst and drama over the kidnapping, corporate politicking and machinations, international corporate espionage/blackmail, and more. If you’ve read any of the previous Forensic Instincts books and enjoyed them as much as I did, then you’ll definitely want to grab a copy of Dead in a Week to read. Even if you haven’t read any of the previous books in the Forensic Instincts series, I think it’s possible to read Dead in a Week and not be lost by any of the previous action. If you’ve read some of Ms. Kane’s historical fiction but haven’t read any of her suspense-thrillers or romantic-suspense books, then I suggest you start with Dead in a Week and then backtrack to the beginning of the Forensic Instincts series, you can thank me later. Seriously, go get a copy of this book ASAP!

2017 Book 276: A FACE TO DIE FOR by Andrea Kane

A Face to Die For (Forensic Instincts #6) by Andrea Kane
ISBN: 9781682320105 (hardcover)
ASIN: B073VV4MHW (Kindle edition)
Publication date: September 19, 2017
Publisher: Bonnie Meadow Publishing

ACCORDING TO URBAN LEGEND, EVERYONE HAS A DOUBLE OR EXACT LOOK-ALIKE. WOULD YOU SEARCH FOR YOURS? AND IF YOU FOUND THEM, WOULD YOU RISK YOUR LIFE FOR THEIRS?

When a case of mistaken identity in Manhattan results in Gia Russo seeing a photo of a Minneapolis woman who looks exactly like her, she can’t resist reaching out to the mysterious stranger. Their Facebook private message exchange blossoms into a budding, long-distance friendship, and the two women agree to meet in New York and gauge the truth with their own eyes.

Shocked at the sight of one another, Gia and Danielle quickly bond over drinks, childhood pictures, and an uncanny feeling that they share more than just a visual resemblance. But when they decide to end the speculation and undergo DNA testing, the test’s confirmation that they’re identical twins raises more questions than answers.

And with good reason. The same mysterious forces that separated the sisters years ago are still at large, desperate to keep the two women apart. When the danger surrounding their reunion escalates and the sisters fear for their lives, Gia turns to an investigator whose wedding she just planned, Marc Devereraux of Forensic Instincts.

Despite being embroiled in another case, Forensic Instincts can’t turn the panicked twins away and agrees to help. But as the team digs up skeletons long since buried, they unearth the shocking truth about who is willing to destroy the sisters and the families they have grown to love in order to save themselves.

It all seems to begin with a simple case of mistaken identity. Gia Russo, a wedding planner in New York is mistaken for Danielle Murano, a veterinarian from Minnesota. Two ladies that resemble one another soon takes a sinister turn in the latest addition to the Forensic Instincts series, A Face to Die For, by Andrea Kane.

Gia Russo and Danielle “Dani” Murano both assume they just look alike, but when they meet in person and are presumed to be identical twins they become curious. When they review their childhood photos together they realize there’s much more than a superficial resemblance to one another. Even though they presumably have different dates of birth, they assume there must be a genetic connection to one another and obtain DNA tests. The results prove they are much closer than even they presumed, they are identical twins. When Dani is mugged and Gia’s home is ransacked and a fire set, they quickly realize there’s more happening than even they initially presumed. Gia turns to the Forensic Instincts team to investigate. As soon as Gia and Dani walk into the Forensic Instincts (FI) office, the team quickly realizes there’s another link to this case and it’s tied to a case they just solved. Who would want Gia and Dani to remain unknown to one another? Why is it so important that they not know their familial connection? And finally, how far is too far to protect a secret?

I always enjoy reading stories by Andrea Kane and found A Face to Die For to be a fast-paced and engaging read. The contemporary story (yes, there’s a past story but if I tell you about it, it may provide too many clues…read the book!), begins with a graduate student being stalked by a professor. Then we’re introduced to Gia and Dani’s stories and their cyberstalker. In both cases, the full team of FI is front and center but it was nice to see Emma and Claire playing more active roles in these investigations. Yes, there are nice little twists in the stories and Ms. Kane keeps the suspense ramped up until the last few pages. I enjoyed all of the characters, especially Gia and Dani, as well as the action. A Face to Die For provides family drama, mystery, murder, stalking, suspense, and more. If you’ve read any of the previous Forensic Instincts books, you’ll definitely want to read A Face to Die For. If you haven’t read this series but enjoy mystery-suspense books, grab a copy of A Face to Die For along with the previous five books in this series. I can’t wait to see what type of intrigue the Forensic Instincts team will delve into next.

Synopsis:

Lady Samantha Barrett wondered if her imaginary hero would ever become real. Of course, he must be devastatingly handsome and just a bit dangerous. Now, her coach is filled with a collection of Gothic novels and her head with romantic notions as she eagerly leaves her brother’s country estate for her first London season. Still unsophisticated and too innocent by far, Samantha is ill-prepared for the hypocrisy of the ton or for the formidable stranger who crosses her path—a stranger she is sure must be the man of her dreams…

Remington Worth, the Earl of Gresham, is reputed to be anything but a hero. He is, however, intrigued by the fresh, young Lady Samantha. At sea, Remington had been a brilliant captain. To help save his country, he has accepted the Crown’s commission to become the most deadly and loyal covert agent, posing as a notorious womanizer and blackmailer. His latest mission is to investigate the mysterious disappearances of England’s prized merchant vessels. With an iron will, he will allow no one to get in his way or touch his heart—until Samantha.

Read an excerpt:

In walked the man of her dreams.

Samantha stared, transfixed, as the vision stepped directly from the pages of her latest gothic romance into the noisy, smoke-filled tavern.

He had arrived… her long-awaited hero.

It mattered not that he was a total stranger to her… nor that he patronized so seedy an establishment as this… nor that he pointedly displayed an ominous-looking knife handle from the top of one muddied Hessian boot. All that mattered was his towering height, his thick black hair, his uncompromising jaw, his piercing gray eyes. And that dimple… it was just where she’d always known it would be; in his left cheek. It flashed briefly as he nodded a greeting to someone, then vanished into the taut lines of his face.

Yes, it was irrefutably he… the hero of all her fantasies.

Breathless and eager, Samantha watched as he carelessly swung off his great coat, shaking rivulets of rain from it with swift, purposeful strokes. Simultaneously, he surveyed the room, his cool gaze taking in the shoddy furnishings and seedy occupants in one enveloping glance.

He moved forward, commanding and sure, coming closer to where Sammy sat… close enough so she could see the drops of water glistening in his raven-black hair, causing the ends to curl a bit at the nape. He seemed to be looking for someone.

Instead, he found her.

Dark brows raised, not with instantaneous, adoring surrender, but with decided, disapproving surprise.

Without hesitating, Sammy flashed him a smile, drinking in his splendid, chiseled features and exciting, leashed power. He was just as she had imagined him… no, better.

Her heart tightened in her chest as he approached her.

“What despicable cad deserted you here, little one?”

“Pardon me?” Sammy blinked in confusion.

With apparent disgust, her hero scanned the room. “You needn’t feel ashamed. Just tell me what unscrupulous blackguard accompanied you to such a place, then abandoned you.”

“Oh, nothing like that, sir.” Sammy assured him brightly. “Actually, it was I who spotted this establishment from my carriage window and chose to stop here. Given the circumstances, it seemed the best place…”

“The best place… to what?” He looked censuring now, his gray eyes chilling, stormier than the skies that heralded tonight’s downpour. “Is this your idea of an evening adventure? If so, you’ve either lost your way or your mind! Tell me, have you looked about you? I seriously doubt that you have, else you would have bolted. And, thankfully, it seems that these low-lifes have yet to spot you as prey. Had they done so, I assure you that your elegant gown would have long since been tossed up over your foolish, beautiful head!”

Sammy sucked in her breath. This wasn’t at all the way she’d envisioned their first meeting.

Following her hero’s icy, pointed gaze, she surveyed the dimly lit tavern, trying to see what was upsetting him so. True, the tables were a bit shabby, even broken in spots, and the pungent smell of gin… mixed with some other, unrecognizable foul odor… permeated the room. And, she had to admit, the occupants of the tavern did need to shave… as well as to bathe. Still, they’d shown no signs of harming or even approaching her; so why was her hero hinting at violence?

“I don’t know what you mean, sir,” she confessed, bewildered. “Despite their rather coarse attire and unpolished manners, the gentlemen here have made no improper advances toward me. They are merely enjoying their spirits and each other’s company.”

The stranger gaped in utter disbelief.

“Gentlemen?” he managed. Leaning forward, he lowered his voice to a muffled hiss. “Sheltered innocent, what you see are pickpockets, highwaymen and drunks… and an occasional murderer or two.” He straightened, emphatic and fierce. “This is Boydry’s… as unsavory a pub as they come… not the bloody Clarendon Hotel!”

“Really?” Samantha was finding it very difficult to share the intensity of his tirade. She was too busy drowning in the hypnotic spell of his towering presence. And, after all, he was only trying to protect her… the foremost duty of a true hero.

“If such is the case, then why are you here?” she asked, half-tempted to stroke the hard, uncompromising line of his jaw. “You don’t appear unsavory to me.”

His dimple flickered in response. “Don’t I? That is only because you don’t know me.”

“No… but I’d like to.”

He blinked. “You’d like to…”

“Oh yes. Don’t you see?” Sammy leaned forward, making an animated sweep with her hands. “It’s as if Mrs. Radcliffe had penned it; a young woman alone… darkness… danger.” A pause. “Of course I would have preferred a castle turret to a tavern…” she gave a philosophical shrug, “… nevertheless, you’ve arrived… and you’re exactly as I pictured you.”

“You have lost your mind,” he muttered.

Guest Author Post by Andrea Kane – SAMANTHA

I’m always excited when an author decides to visit The Book Diva’s Reads, and doubly so when it’s one of my favorited authors. I’m honored to host a visit from Andrea Kane, an author that I’ve come to know and relish by reading her psychological thriller novels and am getting to know and appreciate in a whole new way through her historical romance novels. Today, Ms. Kane will be discussing the growth of a character in the novel Samantha.

How Samantha Grew as a Character

A spin-off is a very complex thing to write. To my way of thinking, it has to be a stand-alone title, one that has its own complete story and its own complete characters. And yet, it also has to be seamlessly tied to the book from which it originated.

Samantha was my very first spin-off, born from my very first novel, My Heart’s Desire. It was as special a book to me as Sammy was as a character. From the instant she appeared on the pages of My Heart’s Desire—Drake’s loyal and loving younger sister—I knew she had to have her own book. It wasn’t a question of “if”; it was only a question of “when”. And the “when” took some time—several years to be exact. Sammy had to grow up, and I had to mentally watch her do so. Transitioning from a precocious fifteen-year-old girl to a ready-to-take-on-the-world eighteen-year-old, Sammy embarked on her first London Season with her own ideas of what it would yield. And it wasn’t a stream of boring noblemen courting her and trying to win her hand.  Nor was it an endless sea of vapid parties and equally vapid conversation. No, Sammy’s goal was to meet and marry the man of her dreams—a man that, with all her naiveté and innocence, she expected to walk into her life and automatically be the hero she’d imagined him to be. Naturally, things didn’t go quite that way.

As a result, even during the course of her own book, Sammy had some growing pains to overcome. And overcome them she did. She matured from an innocent young woman to a strong and determined adult, one who had to overcome dangers and to learn to fiercely protect the man she loved. And the man she loved was a complex and challenging man—a man she had to grow to understand, to heal, and to accept as her true and lifelong hero.

I don’t think I’ve ever loved writing a character more than I did Samantha. It was probably the romantic in me, the dreamer of happily-ever-after, and the believer in the age-old story of how true love conquers all. I hope you feel the same way after you’ve read Samantha!

Synopsis:

Lady Alexandria Cassel scorned London’s frivolous social whirl, seeking adventure as a stowaway aboard a merchant ship. Drake Barrett was the vessel’s powerful captain—and a cynical duke who disdained a noble’s shallow life. At sea he revealed neither his origins nor his wealth, and to Alexandria he was simply a man who made her cool reserve fly with the winds… whose desire for her was as wild as the ocean they sailed.

Caught in the crossfire of war, they were shipwrecked on an idyllic island, where they tasted perfect passion… and tenderness. But Drake dreaded the day of their rescue—when his love would discover that the virile man she adored was at the pinnacle of the aristocracy she despised. Hardly did they suspect the base treachery that would soon threaten them… and the dangers each would brave to join forever their hearts and lives!

“WHAT DID YOU DO WITH MY CLOTHES?”
No storm could be as fierce as the one that raged in Alexandria’s flashing eyes as she faced Drake across the cabin. Her expression was murderous, her small hands clenched at her sides, her tone lethal.
Drake closed the door behind him with a firm click. “By ‘your clothes’ I presume you mean that dusty gown and shredded chemise you discarded on my cabin floor?” He leaned nonchalantly against the wall, regarding her with amusement.
Alex was too angry to be shocked at his casual mention of her undergarment. “You know damned well what clothes I mean!”
“Now, now … such language, my lady. I am truly shocked.”
She looked as though she might strike him.
“I demand that you return my things at once!”
His brows went up. “You demand? Careful, princess, your snobbish airs are showing. Remember, on this ship the only one who demands is me.” He crossed the room, ignoring her as if she were no more than an annoying child.
She stepped in front of him, blocking his way.
“Did you want something, my lady?” He paused, studying her livid expression. She was as transparent as glass, her anger and exasperation clearly evident on her beautiful face.
Drake grinned. “Your clothes are no longer with us.”
The color in her face deepened. “What?”
“They were torn from your adventure.”
“Liar!” she shot back. “There was no reason for you to discard them … at least not for the reason you just gave.”
Her accusing tone made him chuckle. “You are quite correct, princess. The real reason is that I cannot have you parading around in your finery. My men are already lusting after you quite openly. We wouldn’t want to further intoxicate their senses, now would we?”
“The only one on this ship who has treated me with any disrespect is you!” she retorted.
“Then be grateful that I have limited you to men’s attire. Perhaps you will be safe from my lecherous advances.”
Drake moved away, and Alex turned her back as he took off his shirt and tossed it carelessly onto the chair. Tossing his breeches next to his shirt, he put an end to her torment by climbing into his berth.
The cabin was silent. Drake could sense Alex’s presence nearby, and he knew instinctively that she was not in bed.
“Princess?”
He heard her jump. “What is it?”
He cleared his throat. “Is there some problem?”
“No … yes …” She paused. “May I use your basin and some water to wash the dirt from my face?”
Drake smiled in the darkness. “Go right ahead. And, princess … if you can find your way around in the dark, help yourself to one of my shirts. They are clean and more than large enough to protect your modesty.”
Again, silence. Then, “Thank you, Captain.”
Her bare feet padded across the room. Drake listened to her opening the heavy chest, taking out one of his shirts, and slipping it on. Splashing sounds told him she was washing, followed by her soft footsteps as she returned to her cot. Then a thud and a cry of pain.
Drake was out of bed in an instant, moving toward the sound of her choked cry.
“Alexandria? What is it?”
“I walked into the cot,” she whimpered.
“Are you badly hurt?”
In truth she was not. It had been a sudden painful blow, yet already the pain was subsiding to a dull throb. But it was more than she could withstand after her emotionally taxing day. Hot tears filled her eyes, spilled down her cheeks. Try though she would, she could not control the sobs that shook her.
“I’m sorry,” she gasped. “I never cry … and it is not that bad a bruise … I just can’t …” She shook her head helplessly, covering her eyes with trembling hands.
There was no forethought. Drake reacted instantly, pulling her into his arms.
“Shhh,” he soothed, pressing her head against his chest. He felt her tears drenching his bare skin, her narrow shoulders shaking. “It’s all right, sweetheart … don’t cry,” he murmured, raising her chin with his forefinger, wishing he could see her face. He stroked his other hand down her back, pressing her closer to him.
They became aware of each other at the same moment. He was totally naked. She was clad only in a thin white shirt. She needed comfort. He needed more.
