Guest Post: SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING DIVA by Gemma Halliday and Kelly Rey

Hello, my bookish friends. I’m very pleased to welcome the esteemed author Gemma Halliday. Ms. Halliday, along with Kelly Rey, has co-written a new mystery series featuring Marty Hudson and the next book in this series is Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Disappearing Diva. (An appropriate title to be featured on The Book Diva’s Reads don’t you think?!) Today, Ms. Halliday will be discussing some of the characters featured in this story and series. Thank you, Ms. Halliday, for taking time out of your busy schedule to stop by today. Ladies and gents, I give you Ms. Gemma Halliday.

Thank you so much for having me! I’m very excited to be here and chat about my brand-new Marty Hudson Mystery, Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Disappearing Diva! I have to admit that writing this book has been a lot more fun than some others, largely due in part to working with my co-author for this series, Kelly Rey. Not only is Kelly lovely and talented, but she is also one of the funniest authors I know. Some of my favorite parts in this book are scenes that Kelly has added between our main character, Marty, and some of her eclectic, overly adventurous neighbors in her rundown apartment building. Want to meet a couple of them now?

Directly across the hall from Marty lives 2B. 2B’s real name is Ed Something-or-Other, whose last name is 20 letters long with no vowels. He can be seen any day of the week wearing torn jeans and T-shirts featuring wash-worn photos of different classic rock bands or album covers, from back when there were classic rock bands and album covers. His face is long and thin with a scrubby patch of whiskers on the point of his chin and a Jack Nicholson arch to his eyebrows that only serve to add to the devilish leer he’s forever shooting Marty’s way. Marty is 90% sure he’s harmless, but he has a hard time taking no for an answer, asking Marty out at least one a week for the last year.

Just down the hall lives Isaac Bitterman. At 83 years old, the widower is considered quite a catch by the local retiree set, mostly due to the fact he still has some hair and a healthy railroad pension. Mr. Bitterman’s one fatal flaw? His cooking. Okay, so his appalling lack of culinary talent hasn’t actually killed anyone yet, but it’s come close a few times! His sense of smell seems as blunted as his eyesight; his experiment with Limburger cheese and broccoli lingered in the hallway for over a week.

Despite his culinary adventures, one of Mr. Bitterman’s biggest admirers is Mrs. Frist, the wiry octogenarian package of silver hair and gold jewelry in a velour tracksuit that lives on the same floor. When she’s not got her eye firmly to the peephole of her door monitoring the comings and goings of the apartment complex, she’s staking her claim on Mr. Bitterman—at the top of her lungs so there’s no mistake about it!

As you can see, Marty has plenty of characters to keep her entertained while she’s at home in between her moments of danger, intrigue, and investigations in Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Disappearing Diva. I hope you enjoy reading about Marty and all of the wonderfully wacky people in her life as much as Kelly and I enjoyed writing about it. Thanks again for having me!

About the Book

Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Gemma Halliday Publishing (August 14, 2018)
Print Length: 316 pages
ASIN: B07DP3NBH7

From #1 Kindle & New York Times bestselling author Gemma Halliday and USA Today bestselling author Kelly Rey comes a story about Sherlock Holmes, two savvy female detectives, and one chance to catch a killer and the hot Dr. Watson at the same time…

If there’s one thing Martha “Marty” Hudson can’t say no to, it’s her best friend Irene Adler. So when Irene’s little white lie about a fake detective named Sherlock Holmes turns into a real case from an actual paying client, Marty is all in. But their simple missing person case takes a deadly turn when the missing “person” ends up being a missing corpse.

Rebecca Lowery was an opera singer in life and, according to her sister, who hires the famous detective to find her, a diva with capital D. When her body goes missing after a supposedly accidental fall, Marty & Irene can think of several people who might want the diva to disappear permanently—especially if her missing body is actually hiding evidence of her murder. Is it the boyfriend with a temper and a shady record, the jealous understudy who’s now stealing the show, the creepy undertaker with possible ties to the underworld, or the estranged sister herself who now inherits everything?

Marty and Irene aim to find out, even while trying to keep cool around the hot ME, Dr. Watson, and dodging questions from the Irregulars blogger, Wiggins, about the mysterious man behind the name Sherlock Holmes. Will the ladies be able to pull this one off? Or are they in over their heads…and possibly about to take their own final bows?

Honolulu landlord Wilson McKenna can smell a scam from across the room. So when one of his tenants loses everything in a work-at-home scam involving a new perfume, he’s shocked. With his wedding just weeks away, McKenna has to make a tough decision. Does he evict a woman who’s down on her luck? Or take time out from wedding planning to help his tenant?

Turning the case over to his PI-in-training friend Chance Logan seems like the perfect solution—until Chance tells McKenna he needs a wingman for a visit to fragrance entrepreneur Skye Pilkington-Winchester. McKenna’s sure he can keep everyone happy by helping Chance this one time. But nothing is ever as easy as it seems, and soon McKenna’s up to his board shorts in hot water. His tenant’s simple fragrance scam might involve industrial espionage, Skye’s assistant is murdered, and McKenna’s bride-to-be accuses him of having cold feet.

As McKenna and Chance dig deeper, it seems so much of what they’re being told doesn’t pass the sniff test. And the only way to get his life back is to find the dead girl’s missing boyfriend, unmask a killer, and finish up in time for the wedding. Other than that, it’s just another day in paradise.

Crush Week in Nouvelle Vie is a madhouse—in a good way. Tourists pour into town for the pressing of the Napa Valley’s world-renowned grapes and all the town’s businesses get a nice lift, including Bistro and Maison Rousseau. Mimi is raising the ante this year with a Sweet Treats Festival, a wonderland of croissants, cakes, tarts, and soufflés crafted with expert care by the area’s top talents.

Chef Camille’s sister Renee is managing the festival with a cast-iron fist, upsetting everyone, including her sister. Which is bad for Camille when Renee turns up dead in the chef’s kitchen. Essential oils distributor Dorcas Wiley is the boss everyone loves to hate. So when she turns up dead, killed by her own trophy, disgruntled saleswoman Cathy Broderick is the obvious suspect in her murder. Despite opportunity, motive and incriminating evidence, Cathy declares her innocence and enlists her mah jongg pals—Sydney Bonner and her cronies Marianne, Micki, and Kat—to help save her from the death penalty.

Hot off a recent and nearly deadly investigation, the women are cautious about putting themselves in peril again. Syd’s spouse isn’t thrilled about another mystery in their lives, either, but he can’t resist the plea of Cathy’s husband. Soon, Syd is leading the way as they tangle with grumpy salespeople, the victim’s estranged husband and boyfriend, a mysterious housekeeper, a litigious customer, an annoyed sheriff and Cathy’s own arrogant lawyer.

The women have their own issues to deal with in their central Florida town of Serendipity Springs. Kat faces a health challenge, Micki fields a mysterious inquiry from her ex, Marianne has a chaotic anniversary and Syd wrestles with her husband over who’s really in charge. But nothing puts everyday life into perspective like the moment when their investigation brings them face to face with danger.

About the Author

Barbara Barrett started reading mysteries when she was pregnant with her first child to keep her mind off things like her changing body and food cravings. When she’d devoured as many Agatha Christies as she could find, she branched out to English village cozies and Ellery Queen.

Later, to avoid a midlife crisis, she began writing fiction at night when she wasn’t at her day job as a human resources analyst for Iowa State Government. After releasing eleven full-length romance novels and one novella, she returned to the cozy mystery genre, using one of her retirement pastimes, the game of mah jongg, as her inspiration. Not only has it been a great social outlet, it has also helped keep her mind active when not writing.

Bamboozled, the second book in her “Mah Jongg Mystery” series, features four friends who play mah jongg together and share otherwise in each other’s lives. None of the four is based on an actual person. Each is an amalgamation of several mah jongg friends with a lot of Barbara’s imagination thrown in for good measure. The four will continue to appear in future books in the series.

Anticipating the day when she would write her first mystery, she has been a member of the Mystery/Romantic Suspense chapter of Romance Writers of America for over a decade. She credits them with helping her hone her craft.

Barbara is married to the man she met her senior year of college. They have two grown children and eight grandchildren.

Visiting a psychic is outside the norm for Ellison Russell. Finding bodies is not. Unfortunately, the psychic’s crystal ball says she’ll soon be surrounded by death. Again.

Drat.

Now there’s a corpse in the front drive, a witchy neighbor ready to turn Ellison and her (not so) little dog into toadstools, and a stripper named Starry Knight occupying the guest room.

How did 1975 go so wrong so quickly?

Ellison must handle Mother (who’s found a body of her own), make up with a certain handsome detective, and catch a killer, or the death surrounding her might be her own.

Guest Post: Eva Gates THE SPOOK IN THE STACKS

Good day my fellow book divas and divos. I’m in a lot of book groups, seriously, I’m currently in five local book groups and two online book groups so when I heard that today’s guest character was someone from a book group I had a serious fangirl moment. A character talking about a book group and it’s set in a library? Ideal character and setting in my not so humble opinion. Ladies and Gentleman I present to you Josie O’Malley from the Lighthouse Library series by Eva Gates and a member of the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library Classic Novel Reading Club.

Bodie Island Lighthouse Library Classic Novel Reading Club
By Josie O’Malley from the Lighthouse Library Series by Eva Gates

May 2018

I must say I was initially a bit reluctant to join the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library Classic Novel Reading Club. Classic books aren’t exactly my thing. Give me a good bodice ripper any day.

But I’ve come to love it. I love the company, of course, Lucy, Grace, Butch, and Connor in particular. It’s a nice excuse just to get together with friends on a regular basis. Our lives get so busy that it’s easy to lose contact, even with the people you love.

I’m really enjoying reading the books. I never thought I’d like old books so much. The writing can be very dense, and sometimes they seem to drag on and on, and sometimes it’s hard to figure out what the characters are talking about, particularly when the author writes in accents. I really hate that!

But I’ve found that once you get into the book, they can be marvelous. I loved Pride and Prejudice with Lizzy and her crazy sisters. Poor, tragic Tess of the D’Ubervilles. Or the rip-roaring Kidnapped

The book for tonight is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. I read that story back in school, but I didn’t appreciate it at the time (who does when they’re a teenager?). But I was charmed by it this time. A true American classic.

And perfect for tonight. It’s coming up to Halloween, and the group wanted to read something seasonally appropriate. What better than the spooky tale of the Headless Horseman and poor hapless Ichabod Crane and his vain pursuit of the wealthy heiress.

I suspect our own Teddy is in somewhat the same pickle. He seems to be quite smitten with Julia Ruddle, also a wealthy heiress. But Julia doesn’t seem to go anywhere without her grandfather’s assistant, the handsome charming Greg, tagging along.

I can only hope our Halloween festivities don’t turn to murder. Not again.

Halloween in North Carolina’s Outer Banks becomes seriously tricky when librarian Lucy Richardson stumbles across something extra unusual in the rare books section: a dead body.

Wealthy businessman Jay Ruddle is considering donating his extensive collection of North Carolina historical documents to the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, but the competition for the collection is fierce. Unfortunately, while the library is hosting a lecture on ghostly legends, Jay becomes one of the dearly departed in the rare books section. Now, it’s up to Lucy Richardson and her fellow librarians to bone up on their detective skills and discover who is responsible for this wicked Halloween homicide.

Meanwhile, very strange things are happening at the library―haunted horses are materializing in the marsh, the lights seem to have an eerie life of their own, and the tiny crew of a model ship appears to move around when no one is watching. Is Lucy at her wit’s end? Or can it be that the Bodie Island Lighthouse really is haunted?

With The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on everyone’s minds and ghoulish gossip on everyone’s lips, Lucy will need to separate the clues from the boos if she wants to crack this case without losing her head in The Spook in the Stacks, the delightful fourth in national bestseller Eva Gates’ Lighthouse Library mysteries.

Guest Post: Larissa Reinhart – THE CUPID CAPER

Hello, my fellow bookish peeps. Most of you know how I excited I get when an author visits, but this year has seen a host of characters step off the pages of the book and provide us insight. Today, we get a glimpse into the mind (and heart) of Finley Goodhart, the main character in The Cupid Caper by Larissa Reinhart. Thank you, Finley for joining us this morning.

Finley Goodhart, ex-con artist and amateur sleuth

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about the way my life’s gone. Even though I’m only twenty-seven. A long time ago, I resolved myself to thinking that happiness and contentment were ideals for other people. About the time Mother died, when I was seventeen. Actually before that, when I realized the law could be bought for the right price and by the right people. I learned that from carefully observing my father. And concluding my private school education and big house with the pool did not come from a regular cop’s salary.

He’s sheriff now.

But before I’d bitten off a big hunk from the fruit of that terrible tree of knowledge, I’d been happy. But that’s why they say ignorance is bliss.

They also say a sucker is born every minute. Seeing how the world worked, I found it pretty easy to fall into the grift. A life of non-violent crime where I was no longer the sucker, but the swindler. Mostly I hustled pool. Penny taught me short cons. Lex turned me onto the art of the long con. I had good teachers. Our marks were mostly folks with money to burn who fell for the scam through their own greed.

Although I loved Lex and my friendship with Penny, I wasn’t happy. No matter how good it felt sticking it to the man, I still felt guilty. Even if Daddy was crooked, Mother raised me better. And though teenage me might’ve wanted to get back at my father for what he did, adult me wanted to please Mother more. Even posthumously.

So I gave it up. Mostly. I broke up with Lex and hid from Penny, thinking once I figured out how to really go straight I’d come clean to them. Show them another way of life. Hopefully a better one. And maybe convince them to get on the square with me.

But today I learned I was too late. Today Lex found me. And broke the news about Penny’s death. A death that the police should have been called suspicious. But wasn’t.

As I mourn my only friend, I’m really starting over. After ten years of living in the criminal underworld, I’m going to use those skills and connections to find out who murdered Penny and why. And I hope Lex will help me. Before it’s too late for him, too.

The Cupid Caper (A Finley Goodhart Crime Caper)

About the Book

Crime Caper
New Series
Past Perfect Press (April 24, 2018)
320 Pages

Sassy, Sexy, Southern Suspense

She uses her criminal past to catch crooks. He wants her back. In the grift. And in his life. Can Finley Goodhart convince Lex that doing good is the greatest hustle of all?

Ex-grifter Finley Goodhart may try to stay on the straight and narrow, but walking that thin line becomes wobbly when she believes her friend Penny was murdered. The last thing she wants is to work with her ex-partner (and ex-boyfriend), the brilliant (brilliantly frustrating) British con artist, Lex Leopold. However, when it appears Penny’s demise might be related to an exclusive matchmaking service for millionaires, Fin needs Lex’s help to pull a long con to get the goods on Penny.

Romance is in the air for hustlers, gangsters, and their marks. Unfortunately for Fin and Lex, infiltrating the racket doesn’t make for a match made in heaven. This Valentine swindle could stop their hearts for good.

Guest Post: HONOR KILLS by Nanci Rathbun

Hello, my fellow bookish peeps. I’m excited to reveal that we have another character stopping by as a guest (I know, twice in one week). Today’s special guest is Detective Wukowski from the book Honor Kills by Nanci Rathbun, part of the Angelina Bonaparte Mysteries series. The detective will be sharing with us how his relationship with private investigator Angelina Bonaparte began.

A Place of Final Justice

I met private investigator Angelina Bonaparte–and you better pronounce it like the Sicilians do, Boe-nah-par-tay, because she’s pretty down on Napoleon’s version–about nine months ago. Funny, it seems like we’ve always known each other. Back then, I was the lead homicide detective on the Elisa Morano case, and Angie worked for a Mafia lawyer who represented the accused, Tony Baloney. Okay, his real name is Anthony Belloni, but I’m not cutting the local crime boss slack.

Tony was cheating on his wife with Elisa. A wife pregnant with their fifth child. Scum. But as the five-three dynamo pointed out to me, “But the last I heard, running around on your wife isn’t a crime. It’s dishonest and lowdown and immoral, but if I had to report everyone I knew who cheated, the streets would be pretty empty.” She had me there.

I’m a hard-nosed guy. Too many years in the force, seeing the pain one human being can inflict on another, thickened my hide, I guess. It made things a lot worse when my partner, Liz White, was tortured and killed by a drug ring. Hardest thing I ever did was to hold my salute at her funeral.

Somehow, Angie got past my tough hide. She’s a darned attractive ball of determination, though, and we were on opposite sides. I admit to giving her a hard time about leaving the investigation to the police, but she forged ahead and discovered the perp. Got herself shot, too, which set off all my alarms. I had to man up and face the fear of losing another woman who meant something to me. Not just Liz. My younger sister was a teenage victim of gang fire. I decided that having Angie in my life was worth the risk of losing her, and we’ve been together since then.

She had another close call that fall, dealing with a guy who made it out of Bosnia with other people’s money and artifacts. Damnedest escape I’ve ever seen, but you’ll have to read the story, ’cause I don’t want to spoil it for you.

Through the months we’ve been a couple, I’ve faced more than the usual teasing about dating a former Mafia boss’s daughter. The Milwaukee Police Department keeps close track of those who associate with the mob. Internal Affairs put me through the wringer more than once, but there was never anything pinned on me, because I’m too good a cop to cross the line. But this last time … well, let’s just say they gave me an ultimatum about being with Angie.

I’m not giving her up, though. How could I walk away from the toughest, smartest, sexiest woman I know? I’m not that big a dope.
